Two women live and breathe together in unspoken romance. In untethered friendship. In 10 short stories. Who doesn’t love a vignette?
This book brought me some peace on a long train home. It is nice to witness love without intruding in it. Without messing with the shared delicate balance two people have found.
I slam down my book and jerk my head as if to shake the characters by the shoulders. Why the silence!!! Why not start a fight? Why not scream! When the person in front of you means so much, and your sentences bear far more weight with their ears laid upon them? Well, honesty seems heavy.
It was shocking and most pleasing that this author gave me no desire to pry, taught me to enjoy waiting and watching the exchange of care between these two girls. I am a lover of gossip, of getting rattled and draw in, taking sides in relational problematics – even if hopping from one to the other endlessly. But I felt gently encouraged to leave them alone, to let them speak in their own subtext. And so I did. And maybe, since we’re not prying, they might let their guards down for us, just a little, and we will accept them.
