A transcriber for a local sex-therapist listens in a little too much, gets a little too involved in the life of a patient.

A raunchy odd-couple comedy, with an underlying emotional cleverness. A perfume-like base note of trauma.

Oh no! I read this a bit too long ago and it’s all escaping my memory.

First thing let me say let me say: I love a therapist. In a book. It’s a really simple inner-mind exposition tool for 3rd person novels, with a fun psychological twist. And it’s always so interestingly rooted in time; the approach of a therapist tells us so much about era’s approach to mental health, to feelings, the self, blah-di-blah… And this therapist is a funky intelligent twist on the ‘nouveau-masculine’ LA stereotype: his name is literally Om.

Greta is a rather unfased older woman who takes what life gives her and sees humour in it. Flavia is a stoic frozen doll.

Because they both have their own individual relationship to this therapist, the author gets to explore multiple opinions on the concept of trauma simultaneously. Which is really nice! It is true, but hard to illustrate, that we often have and hold multiple contradicting opinions. I often do. This book explores, and gives respect and reason to the characters’ opposing opinions on the topic.I think.

Is the concept of ‘trauma’ a way to better understand ourselves? Is it a word people have come to use as a means of avoidance? Lots to discuss!

I chuckled, I thought seriously. Good book!
